Fons Lluís Hugas i Grau

Lluís Hugas i Grau Fonds

In May 2006, INSPAI acquired the iconographic fonds produced by stockbreeder and amateur photographer Lluís Hugas i Grau (Jafre). The fonds contains 4,424 images, including glass plates, plastic-based negatives and positive prints, reflecting scenes from the author¿s family life, views and landscapes, and festive and sporting events from all over Girona province.

The most remarkable thing about this fonds is its family provenance. Also worth noting is the fact that it includes images from the 1940s and 1950s, an era scarcely depicted in INSPAI, Centre de la Imatge¿s fonds.

Producer history
This is the photographic fonds compiled by Lluís Hugas i Grau (1906, Jafre). He was a livestock trader, photography enthusiast and father of the donor family. Lluís Hugas was born in Bonmatí. Archive history
On May 15, 2006, two albums of black and white 35 mm plastic negatives were acquired by INSPAI, Centre de la Imatge. The first had a total of 983 frames and the second had a total of 1,341 frames. In addition, there were 22 rolls of film wrapped in paper, a roll of film in a small box, and two loose rolls of film. There was also a Klein photographic paper box with three rolls of film in a metal case and approximately 80 negatives, two loose rolls with approximately 1,802 negatives, 20 rolls wrapped in paper (with 30/40 negatives), a roll in a bag, and a roll with 30 negatives. There were also loose rolls: rolls in a small box and rolls wrapped in paper. The description process was carried out from June until September 2006. In order to describe them and provide them with code numbers, the two albums of negatives were relocated to glassine paper sleeves and placed in albums. The rest (the rolls of negatives) were relocated to one envelope per roll and placed in archive boxes, waiting to be digitized, unrolled, cut into sets of six frames, and relocated in polyester sleeves and permanent preservation albums. On May 7, 2007, they were handed over for digitization (in accordance with the Governing Board¿s agreement No. 705, of November 7, 2006), and the fonds was fully digitized and returned to the Centre in August 2007. In the summer of 2009, they were placed in preservation materials: Mylar 75 micron polyester preservation sheets. That same year, the glass plates were cleaned and also placed in preservation materials. From October until December 2020, art historian Judit Esteba reviewed and validated 2,500 images with the aim of making them publicly available through the INSPAI website.
Details of entry
On June 7, 2006, a contract for gratuitous loan and subsequent donation was signed by the Diputació de Girona and the siblings Lluís, Esteve, Martí, Joan, and Marta Hugas i Maurici, as heirs to and donors of the family photograph fonds created as a result of their father Lluís Hugas i Grau¿s interest in photography. The contract provided for donation with the exclusive transfer of rights to Diputació de Girona as of June 7, 2010. On January 8, 2007, two more glass plates were acquired.
