Producer history
José Luis Banús March (Barcelona, 1946 - Girona, 2018) was a photographer and in 2001 he founded the magazine, Top Girona, which specialised in promoting the area, gastronomy and culture of the regions in Girona. He worked together with his wife, the journalist and PP councillor in the Girona Town Hall, Cuca Mascort (1956-2014). Cuca Mascort directed the magazine and Banús illustrated it with high quality, professional photographs. With more than forty years¿ experience in the world of advertising photography, he worked for agencies around the world: Spain, the US, Japan, Germany, etc. Some of these agencies are FPG International (US) or IFA Bilderteam (Germany). He also published in well-known magazines around the world (Interviú, Papus, Novias, Yes International, Papillon, Elle Decoración, etc.) and did more than 2000 covers.
Archive history
The collection arrived at the Diputació de Girona in 2018. It was delivered in 16 cardboard boxes containing the collection photographs. In 2017, the contents of each box were counted, with an indication of the format of the pictures, and where applicable, the agency they belong to. A total of 35,570 pictures were counted, most of which are 35 mm slides and 6 × 6 cm slides, as well as 1 CD and various documents. As the submitted material had no logical order, in 2018, the photographs were sorted and organised into reports. To facilitate organisation, the reports are classified, by theme, into nine groups: interior design, sport, adults, child, work, objects, animals, gastronomy and places. Once the collection was sorted, in 2019 the process of installing the photographs of primary and secondary conversation material got underway. They were cleaned superficially and, at the same time, reports were drafted based on the data and corresponding descriptions. Also, the photographs with cellotape or glue, pending restoration, were put aside. Images were also selected according to the established criteria, for subsequent digitisation. The installation was completed in 2020.
Details of entry
On 3 May 2018, the contract was signed to donate the Banús-March photographic collection to the Diputació de Girona, together with the exploitation rights. This was approved by the Governing Board agreement on 20 March 2018.
