YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHERS OF CATALONIA AWARD

EXHIBITION «BARCELONA, A THEME PARK»

The photographic project by Miquel Muñoz, twenty-second Prize Young Photographers of Catalonia.

The Diputació de Girona, through INSPAI, Image Center, has chosen the photographic project "Barcelona, a theme park", by Miquel Muñoz, as the winner of the twenty-second edition of the Young Photographers Award of Catalonia 2024.

"Barcelona, a theme park", by Miquel Muñoz: This report wants to question the tourism model the city has adopted by exposing those scenes, situations or attitudes representative of the tourism model that a large part of the Barcelona population rejects.

The author says «The negative impact of tourism in Barcelona has become evident in several aspects. The massive congestion of tourists in central areas has generated mobility problems, with overcrowded routes and an increase in noise levels. In addition, the degradation of public services is a concern, particularly focused on waste collection and the area maintenance. The excess of businesses in some neighborhoods has altered the local dynamics and generated a sense of lost identity.»

Barcelona is known as the city in Spain most visited by international tourists, and it stands out for its exceptionally high ratio, of more than 5 tourists per inhabitant. Although this figure reflects the city’s tourist attraction, it has also meant that it has had to face important challenges, especially during the summer season. Labelled as one of the most densely populated cities in Europe, summer in Barcelona turns into a period of congestion and difficulties for local residents.

Floods of tourists arrive daily at the port of Barcelona, more than 3.5 million by 2023..
The Sagrada Família is the tourist attraction par excellence, with more than 4.7 million visitors in 2023, three times more than the population of Barcelona..

The Santuari Gaia Foundation is a vegan centre for the rescue and recovery of farm animals that have been victims of exploitation, mistreatment or abandonment. At the time it was created, there were only two such sanctuaries in Spain, but none for farm animals. «Nobody helps farm animals. They are considered to be for consumption. The bottom of the line”, explains Coque, co-founder of the sanctuary. “At Gaia, through the stories of these animals, we want people to see them not as a product, but as if they were their house dog or cat».
