Miquel Bataller i Fàbregas Fonds

Miquel Bataller i Fàbregas (Girona, 1942 - L'Escala, November 11, 2020) was born in the Mercadal district of Girona, to a well-known family dedicated to trade. His passion for mountaineering led him to his first experiments with photography when he was just fourteen, an activity he continued to pursue throughout his life on a semi-professional basis.

Between 1969 and 1970, he contributed to various periodicals, including the weeklies Destino and Presència. The latter published some of his photographs in the section "Quatre rius", accompanying some short columns written by Josep Cristòfol.

In 1987, he authored an extensive piece illustrating the annual report of the Diputació de Girona (1986). Much of his professional activity revolved around L'Escala, where he set up his second home in 1970. The part of his collection linked to this municipality has been held in the Arxiu Històric of L'Escala since 2009. He donated his contributions to the weekly magazine Presència and the Diputació de Girona to INSPAI, Centre de la Imatge, in 2010.

Bataller's photographs for the magazine Presència illustrate public events, such as the awarding of the Prudenci Bertrana Prize, and the Catalan literature prize Festa de Maig de les Lletres Catalanes, as well as popular celebrations and the main urban transformations that took place in the suburbs of Girona, such as those in Domeny and Can Gibert del Pla.

In his 1987 feature illustrating the annual report of the Diputació de Girona, Bataller depicted the staff and offices of the organisation as well as the main activities carried out by its bodies, including the Health Care Institute, the Social Services Board, the Education and Culture Area, and the Civil Engineering and Roads Service, as well as the main buildings owned by the council.
