Valentí Fargnoli Fonds
(Barcelona, 1985 - Girona, 1944)
Valentí Fargnoli Ianneta (Barcelona, 1885 - Girona, 1944) was one of the major photographers of the first half of the 20th century. His work as a travelling photographer for several decades brought him through the towns and landscapes of Girona province. His photographs depict architecture, landscapes, families and everyday life, and have become the image par excellence of Girona province before the development of tourism.
This personal photographic fonds dates from 1911-1944 and comprises 779 excellent negative images on glass plates with a gelatin silver bromide process. The images are black and white, in a 10x15 cm format.
The geographical scope of the photographs is the province of Girona. The subject matter includes landscapes, views of towns and villages, work in the fields, group portraits, artistic vistas, festivals, scenes from daily life, etc. The fonds is divided into two parts: images of Girona city, and views of towns and villages in Girona province.
This set of plates are original pieces, including whole series of documentary reports on towns or places of interest, with some photographs printed in postcard format and others that were never printed on paper. It is a unique example of the work of the photographer.
The singular nature of the collection, together with its documentary interest in terms of history, culture, ethnology, and photography, is of great heritage value. The recovery of this set of works is of interest for research into the history of photography, as it contains some almost certainly unpublished plates that will contribute to the study of the photographer and of photography from his period.
